How long have you been with Hotel Julien Dubuque?
It will be my first anniversary with the hotel this June.

What path brought you to Hotel Julien Dubuque? Please share a little bit about your professional background and what led you to this industry.

Throughout high school and college, I worked as a server and bartender at various establishments gaining a ton of service industry experience. I graduated from Northeast Iowa Community College with an Associate of Arts degree and then attended the University of Iowa majoring in Graphic Design. I worked at X-Grain Sportswear right out of college as a graphic designer and then went on to work for the Telegraph Herald as a graphic designer before taking some time off to become a mom. The position of Marketing Manager at Hotel Julien Dubuque became available and I took the shot at an exciting new career. So far, it’s been a great opportunity for me and has been expanding my knowledge of marketing.

What are you most passionate about professionally?

Professionally, I am most passionate about learning new things every day and using my creativity to design eye-catching marketing pieces.

What are you passionate about personally? What is your favorite way to spend a free weekend?

I am passionate about living my life to the fullest. I love spending time outdoors, kayaking or hiking, going to live music, and spending quality time with my family and friends.

What are some of your favorite things to do in the Dubuque area?

The Dubuque area has some amazing live music spots, outdoor hiking trails, and great restaurants.

What do you love most about Hotel Julien Dubuque?

I love all of the history within the walls of the Hotel Julien Dubuque. We also have a very welcoming and friendly staff who make it a great place to work.

What is your favorite quote?

You can always tell when a person has worked in a restaurant. There’s an empathy that can only be cultivated by those who’ve stood between a hungry mouth and a $28 pork chop, a special understanding of the way a bunch of motley misfits can be a family. Service industry work develops the “soft skills” recruiters talk about on LinkedIn — discipline, promptness, the ability to absorb criticism, and most important, how to read people like a book. The work is thankless and fun and messy, and the world would be a kinder place if more people tried it. With all due respect to my former professors, I’ve long believed I gained more knowledge in kitchens, bars, and dining rooms than any college could even hold.”  – Anthony Bourdin
